Police officer uses Taser to stop suicidal man

A Chesterfield Township officer used a Taser stun gun to subdue a suicidal man in the Aspen Creek Apartment Complex in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 24.

According to a press release, officers responded to a 911 call about a 56-year-old Chesterfield Township man who was suicidal. The call came from the man's female roommate at 2:40 a.m., Chesterfield Township Det. Sgt. Deron Myers said.

Upon arrival to the 23 Mile Road apartment complex, officers encountered the man profusely bleeding from self-inflicted cuts on both his wrists while sitting on the kitchen floor in the apartment, according to a press release.

As officers attempted to help and reason with the man, he raised a knife to his throat and told officers, “Go ahead and kill me,” according to the release.

It was at this time officer Michael Ogden Tased the man in fear that if something wasn’t done he would further injure himself. The deployment of the Taser stun gun caused the man to drop the knife and fall back against the cupboards. However, once the Tasing cycle was complete the man went back to reach for the knife.

Ogden deployed his Taser stun gun again, once again disabling the man. It was at this time officers moved in and disarmed him.

"It was a great call," Myers said, adding it was a judgement call within the department's policies and procedures. "It worked perfectly."

Medstar and Chesterfield Township fire units were called to administer first aide. The man was transported to Mount Clemens Regional Hospital where he is currently recovering, according to the release.

Is Campus Security Really Good Enough For Your Daughters Safety and Survival?

My daughter just graduated from high school and we are thinking about her safety while she is away at college. My wife and I like to take a nice walk through the neighborhood and watch the sun set over the mountains to the west. It would be nice to think that one day we might not need to worry about attack from viscous stray dogs, and not need a high voltage dog repellent stun baton or other protection device.

Some people think that when they no longer want or can afford that out of control dog, dropping it off in a rural neighborhood is a good idea. It is not, but unfortunately, it happens. My brother and I were talking recently about his daughter and her plans for college next fall. Man Buys his wife 100,000 volts Stun Gun and loses his Testicles!

A funny story from a guy who purchased his lovely wife a 100,000 volt stun gun as a gift.

Last weekend I saw something that sparked my interest. The occasion was our 15th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for my wife. What I came across was a 100,000-volt stun gun. The effects of the high voltage stun gun were supposed to be non lethal and short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on the assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety. WAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the stun device and brought it home. I loaded the single 9 volt eveready battery in the stun gun and pushed the button. Loud crackling and a a small blue electric arc between the electrodes! I was a little disappointed. I did learn, however that if I pushed the button AND pressed it against a metal surface at the same
time I'd get the blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the prongs and back to the surface. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to my wife what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that it couldn't be all that bad with only one 9 volt battery, right? There I sat in my recliner, my cat looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this 100,000 volt stun gun on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping the cat (for a fraction of second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this thing to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, stun gun in the other. The directions said that

What happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best...?

I'm sitting there alone, the cat looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dumb ass,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little thing couldn't hurt all that
bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for the heck of it. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . .

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . WHAT THE HELL!!!

I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position with tears in my eyes body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs?

The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a 100,000 volt stun gun, one
note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when
you zap yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is tossed from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative?

SON-OF-A-BITCH, THAT HURT LIKE HELL!!!

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point after being shocked with 100,000 volts), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape.

My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocain, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs!!! I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I pooped in my shorts, but was too numb from the 100,000 volt shock from the stun gun to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair.

I'm still looking for my testicles and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!!

My wife loved the stun gun, and now regularly threatens me with it!

How I used my Cell Phone Stun gun in a Road Rage Incident.

I live in a rural area at base of the Sierra Mountains. The roads into town are narrow and winding with cell phone coverage spotty at best, as you would expect. Generally things are pretty quiet out here. Even so my wife and I always bring our cell phones and stun guns when we travel as part of our personal defense plan.

We have all had a fast moving car or truck will come up behind us on a rural road at one time or another. In these instances it is customary to find a safe place to pull over and let the faster vehicle pass. This usually results in a smile and a wave, but not always.

Recently I was taking a drive into the city and had my first ever experience with road rage on a rural road. A big Chevy truck came up on me at a high rate of speed and as always I pulled of the road and let him pass as soon as it was safe. As he passed I gave the customary wave although at the speed this guy was traveling there was no way to tell if he waved back. A few miles further, where the rural road meets the highway into town, the the big truck was stopped at the side. Personal Safety when Confronting Danger

Always trust your instincts, if something feels wrong, something is probably wrong.

Be aware of your surroundings; be alert just like defensive driving. You don’t want to think the worst of someone walking towards you, although just being ready could mean the difference.

Carry your bags close to you; this makes it less inviting for a dirt bag to grab your goods. Also carrying your bag close means your personal protection device is within reach.

Look confident, believe you ready are for whatever may happen, and that no one better try it. Believe me when you’re carrying your personal protection device it alone gives you that confidence.

If you are planning to go somewhere, let someone know where and when you expect to be back.

If you are being followed head to a crowded place. Better yet if you’re familiar with your area head for the police station. Upon arriving let them know of your situation and that you have a personal protection device on you.

We all know, as the unemployment rate rises, so does the crime rate. Weather you live in the city or the country crime is an unfortunate statistic. Carrying a personal self defense device is a good idea for any law abiding citizen. I always encourage everyone to do as much as you possibly can to avoid a confrontation - "anticipation and avoidance" are the key words. If you get caught up in a situation, try to talk to an aggressor without provoking them. Practice relaxation, as appearing fearful or stressed can actually provoke an attack. Remember that body language is important in aggressive situations, so maintain a comfortable distance between you and the aggressor.

The use of the alarm on a multi-function stun gun, which emits a loud piercing sound, will temporarily disorientate an attacker giving you enough time to escape. Carry it somewhere where you can get to it quickly - don't leave your stun gun buried at the bottom of your purse or bag. If you have a multi-function stun gun with an alarm, use it and shout as well.

Keep yourself steady if danger threatens. Panic can disable you, so again it is very important to learn how to stay in control when confronted with a difficult situation. If it is necessary for you to fight back, use what police refer to as the "bash and dash" approach. The primary attack points are the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, throat, groin, knees or shins; choose whichever is easiest to get to.

When an attacker grabs you from behind don't struggle forward, you'll only exhaust yourself. It is much more effective to throw yourself backwards and surprise your attacker. Once you've achieved your primary aim of stunning or surprising your attacker, get away as fast as you can. If you manage to overcome them don't attack again, you could be putting yourself in more danger or you could end up being charged with assault.

It is your right to defend yourself with reasonable force. This includes using items you have with you such as an umbrella, bag, multi-function stun gun with an alarm or pepper spray. However, don't carry or use anything that the law would regard as an illegal weapon. Of course always check your local laws regarding personal protection devices.

Wherever you are on the street, in an office building or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or cab, stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings. Always have your personal alarm with flashlight easily accessible from your purse or pocket.
Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uncomfortable, avoid the person or situation and leave.
Always be familiar with the neighborhoods where you live and work. Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals, and restaurants, or stores that are open late.

On Foot-Day or Night

Stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets. Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, dark parking lots, or alley. Always carry a personal alarm with a flashlight.
Don't flash money or other tempting targets like jewelry or clothing.
Carry your purse close to your body, with your flashlight and personal alarm in your hand or easily accessible.
Put your wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket, not your back pocket. Carry only what is necessary and try not to keep currency and credit cards all in one place.
Don't wear shoes or clothing that restrict your movements.
Have your car or house key with you personal alarm/flahlight in hand before you reach the door.
Try to use automated teller machines in the daytime. Have your card in hand and don't approach the machine if you're uneasy about people nearby. Better yet, only use the ATM machines inside of grocery store, malls, or gas stations.
If you think someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk toward an open store, restaurant, or lighted house.
If someone harasses you, don't be embarrassed. Loudly say "Leave me alone! Someone call the police! Get away!" If that is not enough of a deterrent, using an extremely loud personal alarm will send a would-be attacker running.

Vehicle Safety:

Keep your car in good running condition. Always check your fuel level before traveling any distance. Make sure there's enough gas to get where you're going and back.
Always roll up the windows and lock car doors, even if you're coming right back. Check inside and out before getting in.
Avoid parking in isolated areas. Be especially alert and have your personal alarm in hand when in dark lots and underground parking garages.
If you think someone is following you, don't head home. Drive to the nearest police or fire station, gas station, or other open business to get help

If Someone Tries to Rob You:

Don't resist. Give up your property. It's not worth your life.
Report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker as accurately as possible. Your actions can help prevent others from being victims.
Take a Stand! If you can, use your personal alarm to scare away an attacker. Most criminals are too lazy to attack someone who is prepared.
Make your neighborhood and working place safer by reporting broken street lights, cleaning up parks and vacant lots, and lobbying local government for better lighting in public places.
Initiate a block watch program in your neighborhood by contacting your neighbors and local crime prevention unit.

Simple Tips For Preventing Break-Ins At Your Home

You've lived here for years. You've never had any trouble. But one otherwise quiet night, you hear a strange noise. It sounds like the jiggling of a doorknob. Is someone breaking into your house? Are the kids still in bed? Where did you leave the phone? It's three o'clock in the morning, and there is no one around to help. With no home alarm system, your mind starts racing a million miles a second trying to think of ways to keep your family safe and - at the same time - work out an escape route.

This is a situation all too many people find themselves in every year. The middle of a potentially life-threatening emergency with no security alarm system is no time to discover you need additional help. The best time to work those things through is right now when all is well. There are some simple ideas you can put into place right now that can help prevent break-ins at your home. Even if you have a home alarm system, these tips go a long way to give added safety.

Leave the Outside Lights On Every Night

Most people never turn on the outside lights unless they are leaving. While they believe turning outdoor lights on when they leave is a safety measure, they are only partially correct. Why? Because if the only time you turn the outdoor lights on is when you leave, you're sending a glaring signal to burglars that says, "Hey! I've gone out for several hours tonight so help yourself. I'll turn the lights off when I get back so you and your buddies will know not to come around."

Turn your porch lights and other outdoor lights on *every* night, whether you're leaving your home or not. This way, you accomplish two things. First, you shed light on dark areas that might otherwise help to camouflage burglars. Second, you take away the signal burglars are waiting to see that tells them you're away from home. Alarm systems are fabulous for helping in times of emergency, but prevention is still the number-one cure for break-ins.

Un-Clutter Windows and Doorways

When you give burglars plenty of cover, they will likely take advantage of it. Tall bushes and shrubs that fully or partially cover windows make great hiding places. Burglars can easily squat behind a bush as they work on prying open a window for entry. Likewise, tall topiaries, statues or other objects that offer cover to burglars should be removed from around your doorways. Don't provide anything that would give a robber a hiding place.

Make It Too Much Trouble

Most burglars are looking for an easy score. If they think entry will be too difficult or that there is a high risk of being caught (as is the case with security alarm systems), they will probably move on to another house. If you currently have a home alarm system, place the signs and window stickers in prominent places where they can be readily seen. This practice is frequently recommended by police departments because of its effectiveness. Motion detector lights are also good deterrents. Security pins for sliding doors and windows would definitely be too much trouble for your average burglar to fuss with. In addition, double-paned windows are extra trouble to break (and extra noisy!) giving burglars yet another reason to look elsewhere for a victim.

Another good idea is to survey your home and think like a burglar. If you were trying to break into your own house, how would you do it? What would you need to be successful? If you find easy ways to break into your home, chances are a burglar will, too. Make notes as you walk around your house and then take immediate action to stop trouble before it starts.
